BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Flames broke out at 4:16 a.m. this morning at Virginia Avenue Elementary School in East Bakersfield according to the Kern County Fire Department.
KCFD said they received calls for from people in the area and when they arrived on scene there was heavy smoke and flames on the exterior of the school’s cafeteria with fire also coming from the roof.
Though the school is not in session, crews confirmed that there were no occupants inside or injured due to the fire.
Officials said the first crew in began an aggressive fire attack including sending firefighters to ventilate the roof. This coordinated attack was able to knock down the fire within 25 minutes of arrival, preventing the fire from spreading to other school buildings.
The cause is under investigation. There were no injuries sustained to firefighters or civilians.
