Local heroes and veterans returned home to Bakersfield this morning following a trip to the nation's capital.
The first honor flight of the season left Monday to visit monuments and local lawmakers.
World War II veteran Charles Mortensen found the whole experience eye-opening.
"I think the whole town of Bakersfield came out to greet us. It's wonderful," Mortensen said.
Honor flights stem from a non-profit organization created to honor veterans with the mission of sending them to Washington, D.C.
The latest flight had 16 veterans and their chaperones, including a dozen vets from World War II.
