The Kern County Board of Supervisors is continuing the Fireworks Task Force for the second year in a row, as we approach the 4th of July holiday.
The Kern County Fire Department gave the board an update on how successful the task force was last year. As part of their "You light it, we write it" campaign to educate the public on the use of legal and illegal fireworks.
In 2015, a total of 93 citations were given out. There were 7 arrests, and 2,500 pounds of illegal fireworks seized.
Based on these numbers, the fire department said the enforcement was a success and recommended the board continue the task force, in an effort to continue educating the public.
The board agreed.
Using illegal fireworks will cost you $1,500 for the first violation, $2,000 for the second violation and $2,500 for the third.
In 2015, 11 fires were caused by people who lit illegal fireworks.
