Kern River recreation on the rise

Safety tips while having fun on the Kern River
Posted

Recreation is back on the Kern River where you can go kayaking, rafting, and fishing.  But, all of this comes with these very important safety tips before you have fun and adventure out on the Mighty Kern.

The river is rising due to the melting snow pack so here are some safety tips from Sierra South Mountain Sports so you can stay safe and have fun!

1)  Tubing is not advised on the currents and rapids.  The Kern River flow is the strongest that it has been in years.

2)  Go with a commercial outfitter if you want to kayak or raft for the first time and want to learn how to do it on your own.

3)  Make sure you know how to swim in case you fall out of a boat.

4) Always wear a life jacket!  The best ones are the ones with a pillow neck brace.

With these tips you can have fun and stay safe while enjoying the Kern River.
