The Kern County Fire Department received a call for a grass fire in the area of 40th St. West and Backus Rd. around 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
When crews arrived they had a 10 acre fire moving at a moderate rate of speed.
The fire crews were able to slow the fire and keep it to a total of 17 acres.
No structures were threatened and there were not injuries.
The car of the fire was determined to be locals in the area discharging firearms.
KCFD would like to remind residents living in high fire hazard areas to exercise caution when using firearms.
KCFD said due to recent hot weather and dry fuels, residents should make sure they maintain the defensible space around their homes.
