Jose Medrano was convicted Thursday of first degree murder for the benefit of a criminal street gang along with other gun and gang charges.

Medrano, a Norteno gang member was 22 at the time of the offense.

On August 24, 2016 at 8:30 a.m., Delano police officers were called to 11th Avenue and Glenwood Street for a major vehicle collision.

Orlando Morales, 34, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and it was initially believed the accident caused his death.

However, Morales had been hit by a single gunshot before the collision, causing him to lose control and hit a building.

Through investigation, detectives determined the shooting occurred in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on 11th Ave.

Medrano had reached over from the front passenger side of a moving vehicle and fired two shots at Morales, fatally injuring him.

Medrano will be sentenced on June 16 and faces a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
