The Arvin Police Department says two people have been arrested after shots were fired during a vehicle pursuit Saturday night.

Police say around 8:30 p.m., an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a silver Pontiac for a vehicle code violation when the vehicle fled immediately.

Authorities say the pursuing officer reported three shots fired from the driver's side and assistance was requested from the Kern County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol.

According to police, the pursuit continued for about 30 minutes during which items were being thrown from the vehicle until the Pontiac became stuck in the mud on Malaga Rd. near Mountain View Rd.

Police say the two people inside the Pontiac were taken into custody without further incident.

The driver, 39-year-old Martha Pulido Martinez, and the passenger, 26-year-old Jose Andrez Garcia, were arrested and booked on several felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon.

Police say no suspects or officers were injured and no police vehicle were struck by the gun fire.
