The county budget for the next fiscal year was approved at $2.5 billion, down $545 million from the last fiscal year.

This could trim nearly 1,700 positions from the Kern County payroll. The budget lowers general fund spending by $121 million

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office will be cutting back on services and will be the most impacted by the cuts with 155 positions unfunded and unfilled. Layoffs will also take place.

However, supervisors approved more than a million dollars for both a training academy and staffing Tuesday for KCSO.

The fire department will also see downsizing and the District Attorney’s Office will lose three positions.
