BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A fire has engulfed an abandoned gym in East Bakersfield, Sunday night.

According to the Kern County Fire Department, the fire started shortly before 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of Niles Street.

The fire may have been started by a transient, according to KCFD Captain Tom Ellison.

Fire officials have responded to the same abandoned property several times in the past to put out fires, according to Ellison.

Several streets are restricted in the area by California High Patrol units.
