Taft police officers arrest man wanted for 'street terrorism'

Posted

A fugitive from Ventura County, wanted on two felony warrants with bail of nearly a half-million dollars, was arrested at gunpoint by Taft police just southeast of Highway 33 on Center Street at noon on November 21.

Chief of Police Ed Whiting said the suspect, whose name was not immediately released, had been hiding out in the Taft area and was wanted for what Whiting termed "street terrorism."

He had been under surveillance and was followed by police when he left a residence where he had been staying.

Other officers joined and a felony car stop was initiated when the suspect vehicle parked on Center Street.

Heavily armed police, some with assault rifles, ordered the suspect and a woman out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

The woman came out first, backing across the street with her hands in the air.

A man, identified by Whiting as the suspect, came out second and was arrested at gunpoint.

Both were taken into custody without incident.
