The Tehachapi Police Department is reminding people to stay safe this holiday season, and consider these tips when traveling away from home this Thanksgiving!

Home Safety Tips

  1. Leave your keys with a trusted neighbor or friend. Have them pick up mail and deliveries and occasionally move your parked car around.
  2. Secure doors and windows and eliminate ladders or house-hugging tree limbs to make sure there isn't easy access into your home.
  3. Operate your home lights with a timer so you've always got something lit at night.
  4. Don't post on social media that you're out of town, wait until after you get back to post the pics!
  5. Invest in a security alarm system.
  6. Make sure that your home is secure.

Travel Safety Tips:

  1. Pack the least possible amount and be sure that your luggage stays under your or an authorized personnel's control at all times.
  2. Carry only the credit cards and ATM cards you absolutely need. Do not carry large amounts of money.
  3. Make sure everyone in your party has the name, address and phone number of the place you're staying and carries that info with them at all times.
  4. When traveling, lock your vehicle at all times.
  5. Plan ahead, know where you're going, how to get there and obtain a new map or latest GPS instructions.
  6. Bring an emergency road kit in case of a breakdown or accident.
  7. Ideally travel outside of the heaviest days to avoid congestion
  8. Don't drive distracted!
