New grocer brings local produce to downtown

Posted

The Hens Roost kicked off a unique concept on Wednesday: bringing Kern County farmers and vendors that you'd normally see at a farmer's market to downtown Bakersfield.

The group, who also put together weekend farmer's markets in west and southwest Bakersfield, are now operating as a small grocer each Wednesday on G Street.

"Produce in a store, who does that help?" asked Jaclyn Allen, owner and operator of the Hens Roost.

"We don't know. What farm does that come from? No one knows, really. But if you buy from us, we know exactly where it's coming from."

Allen hopes that their "keep it local" concept will give customers what they want: fresh, local products while keeping the money flowing in Kern County.

"We grow everything here, why aren't we eating it, why aren't we making food with it?" Allen asked of Kern County.

"Why aren't we feeding ourselves with the amazing things that will actually make us feel better?"

The grocer, located just off the corner of G Street and 19th Street, will be open every Wednesday from 10 AM to 6 PM.
