On paper Ridgeview's basketball team has been nearly perfect , finishing the season 26-1, more games than any other team in Kern County. While you may think the team has been clicking on all cylynders players and coaches say they haven't even had a perfect game.
"We haven't. Suprising we haven't," said senior Isaiah Martin. This tuesday the Wolf Pack did cap a perfect record in the South Yosemite League with a win over their biggest rival Independence.
"We played hard," said second year coach Michael Martin after Tuesday's win. "Could have played better tonight as a team but it's really hot in here." With the AC not working it was hot, but so were the team's shooters. And on a team that has made light work of their competition, it seems no one has been hotter than the team's leading scorer Isaiah Martin.
"He's probably our most athletic guy, he's our best dunker, he's our guy that gets to the rim. He's our highlight reel," said coach Martin. Just watch a couple of Isaiah's dunks in practice and it's easy to see why coach Martin describes him as their "hype man".
"It's just really fun just being able to play basketball-just playing with my teammates is really fun at the end of the day," said Isaiah whose 16.9 points per game led the team. While winning night after night was fun, in his final year Isaiah says it won't mean anything unless they can add another banner for a valley title.
"It's been every season ever since i've been here i've been wanting one," he said.
While the want has been there, coach Martin thinks he finally has the talent to match. "We're good enough let's just go prove to everybody that we're better than everybody else in Bakersfield and this whole valley thing has really taken everybody by storm," said Martin.
