According to the family of 16-year-old Ashley Cruz, she is in stable condition.
Cruz underwent surgery on Thursday and is currently in intensive care. Her family shared that she will also need surgery to put her pelvis, leg and arm back together. She will have her second surgery this weekend.
The California Highway Patrol is confirming that the 16-year-old who was hit by two vehicles in front of Foothill High School was distracted when she was hit.
Cruz was hit by a pickup truck around 6:48 a.m. Wednesday.
The CHP found multiple electronic devices and headphones at the scene and say Cruz was using them.
According to the CHP, she was in the crosswalk when she was first hit by 86-year-old Lloyd Scroggin, who was driving a 2008 Ford Ranger. He initially fled southbound on SR-184, but his family called the Bakersfield CHP office to share that he had been involved in an accident.
While she was on the ground, she was hit a second time by 21-year-old Alexander Romero, who stayed at the scene and provided a statement.
Cruz sustained major injuries but was awake and talking to officers before being taken to Kern Medical Center.
CHP is also saying that due to the time, before sunrise, lighting may have been a factor.
Officers have contacted Scroggin, and an investigation into hit-and-run charges are pending.
California Department of Transportation will be looking into the intersection as there have been multiple incidents there in the past.
“Our traffic investigation department is opening an investigation on the intersection and their recommendation will be complete near the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017,” CalTrans representative Christian Lukens shared.
