UPDATE (JUNE 18, 5:30 p.m.) After saying that the 11-year-old girl hit by a car on Friday night died of her injuries, Bakersfield Police are retracting that statement. Family of the girl says she is still alive.

ORIGINAL STORY: BPD says an 11-year-old girl is currently in critical condition at a local area hospital after being hit by a car in Southwest Bakersfield.

Police say the incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. Friday night when the 11-year-old and another person were crossing the street at the intersection of Stockdale Highway and California Avenue.

At this time BPD does not know who is at fault but they will be reviewing nearby video as well as talking to eye witnesses.

Police say the driver did stay at the scene and is cooperating. Investigators said on Friday that they have reason to believe alcohol may have been involved, though since then police say they don't know whether alcohol or drugs are a factor.

If you have any information, you are asked to call BPD.
