The Kern High School District's controversy surrounding transgender bathrooms has taken another turn tonight -- as a school board member is stepping down from his post.
School board member Chad Vegas has announced on his Facebook page that he won't run for re-election in November.
Vegas said in the post:
If you are struggling to understand why I am not running for reelection, it is because I cannot enforce policies and regulations like these. The law requires board members enforce these laws. Read the policy on pronouns. I can't force Christian teachers to violate their religious conscience. It is tyranny. I also can't enforce the loss of security and privacy for the vast majority of students for the sake of a few. In fairness, I am more concerned about the perverted males who will take advantage, and not the transgender students who are really rare. This picture below is a Kern High Administrative regulation.
This comes after the school board voted yesterday to adopt policies put forth by the state-- that allows students to use the bathroom with the gender they identify as.
The board came in at a three-to-two vote in favor of the new policy.
Vegas was one of those dissenting votes.
The mandate comes as part of the nation-wide effort from the Obama administration.
The approval of the policy is being seen as symbolic since the Kern High School District has been allowing students access to the restroom they identify with since 2013.
