Veterans set to hike 22km in Bakersfield Saturday to raise awareness about veteran suicide

Military members are encouraged to take part in a 22km hike through Bakersfield to raise awareness for the 22 veterans committing suicide every day nationally. 

The Kern County Veterans Service Department is hosting the "Silkies Hike" Saturday October 21st. 

All veterans of the United States Armed Forces, active, reserve and guard are welcome to attend. Veterans may also bring their significant other, but they ask you do not bring children. 

The veterans will be meeting around 8:00 a.m. at Lengthwise at the Marketplace and will walking at 9:00 a.m. to several local restaurants and landmarks. 

The group hopes the hike will bring awareness for Veteran Suicide, PTSD and build positive community relationships. 

An estimated schedule of the veteran's stops are below: 

Meet at Lengthwise Market Place 8:30 a.m., depart 9:00 a.m.

Arrive Bakersfield Pizza Co 10:15 a.m., depart 11:15 a.m.

Arrive B Ryders Sports Bar 12:40 p.m., depart 1:45 p.m.

Arrive Bakersfield Fire Station 15 (Location of 9-11 Memorial) 3:00 p.m., depart 3:30 p.m.

Arrive Lengthwise Market Place 4:30 p.m., hike completed.

Civilians are also welcome to show support as the veterans take part in the hike and ask civilians to meet them at the beginning or at one of their designated stops along the way. 

Officials said veterans can wear Silkies/Ranger shorts, or PT shorts or whatever. Shirts, feel free to rock your unit, MOS, branch T shirt (sleeves optional). Combat boots recommended, but wear whatever you want. Boonies, sombreros, ball caps.

Organizers also ask those participating to bring a backpack, extra socks, camelback with water to stay hydrated and sunscreen.
