Man dead after being struck by vehicle in southwest Bakersfield early Sunday morning

UPDATE (7:38am): Bakersfield Police said around 4:15 a.m. they responded to a person in the roadway possibly struck by a vehicle near California Ave and Mervyn's Place. 

When officers arrived they found an adult man lying in the roadway with fatal injuries. 

The investigation determined an adult driver of a vehicle was traveling eastbound on California Avenue and came upon the pedestrian laying in the roadway. The driver attempted to swerve from striking the man and subsequently struck the man lying in the roadway. 

Police said the driver of the vehicle was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and speed was not a factor in the collision. 

The impairment or being under the influence ofn the part of the pedestrian is unknown at this time. 

The name of the pedestrian will be released by the Kern County Coroner's Office after they notify next of kin.

It near the intersection of California Ave. and Mervyn's Pl. in Southwest Bakersfield.

Bakersfield Police have roads blocked on California Ave. between Mervyn's Pl. and Easton Dr. to while their investigation continues.

The suspect driver did stay at the scene and is cooperating with officers. 

Officials said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this case. They are still trying to determine whether or not speed was a factor. 

The roadway is expected to be closed down until 7 or 8 a.m. Sunday.
