A man was killed in a Porterville crash early Friday morning while chasing his estranged girlfriend after stabbing her, Porterville police said.

Investigators said the deadly chain of events began when the man, Jose Viveros, 37, of Richgrove, Calif., got into a fight with his 32-year-old estranged girlfriend in the 1000 block of North Luann Street in Porterville, where he stabbed her several times.

Despite her injuries, the woman was able to disarm Viveros, get out of the home, and drive away, police said. Soon after, Viveros began chasing her in his vehicle, reaching speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour, and he eventually crashed into a tree in the 200 block of Main Street at around 1:40 a.m. He was killed instantly.

The woman also crashed, and she was taken to the hospital with injuries from both the crash and the stabbing.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Porterville Police Sgt. Carl Jordan or Det. Brett Calloway at 559-782-7400.
