They say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

The saying holds true when it comes to close political races.

Recent local TV ads attacked 21st Congressional District candidates, Democrat Emilio Huerta and Republican David Valadao.

An attack ad against Huerta has claimed he took land from the United Farm Workers meant for low income families. Huerta responded, "The attorney general's office was asked to investigate. They investigated, they found no wrongdoing, no ethical violations, and they found that the transaction was totally transparent."

In turn, the Democratic House Majority PAC released their own ads which claimed that a vote for Valadao is a vote for Donald Trump.

23ABC reached out to Valadao's office who sent this statement:

"The Democrat Super PAC ad is absolutely and completely false. This is nothing more than a last-ditch effort by DC insiders attempting to salvage a deteriorating campaign. Valley voters deserve more. David Valadao will continue fighting for water, our veterans, and local jobs." - Cole Rojewski, Campaign Spokesman

The results from the primary election in June show the race between the two is a close one.

Valadao lead with 40.68% of votes. Huerta had 38.38%.

"Once they started attacking me. That was because they were making in-roads and at that point we knew that we were going to be victorious in the selection and that's why they went negative."

Just as President Obama gave Huerta an endorsement today, he said he'll continue focusing on his campaign.

"My campaign is based on the issues. It's not based on going negative. The worst air in the Central Valley, that we are on of the poorest congressional districts in the valley, the education disparity that exists here in the valley."
