Law enforcement officers who leave firearms in their car would be required to lock it away out of plain view under a bill moving to the governor's desk.
Officers who fail to store their gun in a locked container or in the trunk would be fined up to $1,000. The author of the bill said the legislation comes in light of several handguns being stolen from patrol cars and used to kill civilians.
Most civilians are required to keep firearms stored away in their cars, however current law excludes officers.
