BPD: Possible device in Ridgeview High School locker room, students evacuated

UPDATE (March 11, 2017 5:25 p.m.): Bakersfield police confirmed the item found in the Ridgeview High locker room was a homemade firework that was placed inside a locker and ignited. No damage was caused and no one was injured.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to call the Kern High School District Police at 661-827-3218.

UPDATE (March 11, 2017 4:20 p.m.): BFD Hazmat team members analyzed a sample of the material collected from the locker room. It was determined that the sample was consistent with materials used in the manufacturing of fireworks.

UPDATE (March 10, 2017 12:35 p.m.): Students are being released from Ridgeview for the rest of the day. Buses will arrive at the school at 1 p.m. and parents can pick up their students at the southeast corner of campus.

UPDATE (March 10, 2017 12:15 p.m.): BPD has asked all classes be evacuated as a precautionary measure. The students are safe and supervised.

Bakersfield Fire Department firefighters are investigating the situation and preparing for a hazardous materials operation. BFD asks the public to avoid the area.

Bakersfield police are on scene at Ridgeview High School in Southwest Bakersfield for a possible device in the men’s locker room.

According to the Kern High School District, something in a locker room set off an alarm. The gym was cleared of students.

Classes have not been impacted and there were no injuries.
