A South High boys' varsity basketball coach was killed in a crash in Northwest Bakersfield Sunday morning.

South High Athletic Director Jim McConnell and South High Girls' Varsity Coach Ray Francisco confirmed the victim of the fatal crash as Brain Carter, boys' varsity basketball coach and special education teacher at South High.

Officials said a single vehicle crashed at the intersection of Calloway Drive and Noriega Road just after 8:30 a.m.

The vehicle struck a tree and other objects on the east side of the roadway. Carter, who was driving the truck, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling southbound on the northbound lanes of Calloway before clearing the fence at the golf course.

Officials have not determined where he entered the opposing lanes.

Calloway Drive between Noriega Road and the Save Mart shopping center were shut down for several hours.

Investigators say weather is delaying their investigation and clean up.

Police said it is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department (661) 327-7111.
