Under new legislation signed Friday by Governor Jerry Brown, California motorists will pay higher gas and diesel taxes starting November 1, the LA Times reported Friday.

The plan has received negative reviews from some. Assemblyman Vince Fong has been at the forefront, leading the opposition to the gas tax increase.

Opponents have launched a recall campaign against a senator and are talking about a possible initiative to roll back and control taxes and other fees.

The new $5.2 billion annual tax will also include vehicle fees but will go toward bridge and road repairs.
