Kern County supervisors are considering adopting a flexible hiring freeze to offset the $44.5 million budget deficit for 2016-17, Administrative Officer John Nilon confirmed Monday.

Nilon recommended cutting current unfunded positions or positions vacant for more than a year.

Critical information available in July will be evaluated before the formal adoption of the budget in August.

The proposal will be discussed with county supervisors Tuesday for the fiscal budget over the next year.
