The suspect in a hate crime arrest at Farmer Boys last week will appear in court Tuesday.

Richard Martinez Mendoza, 22, walked in to Farmer Boys on Haley Street in East Bakersfield and demanded a free Gatorade from an employee.

When the employee refused, the suspect picked up a chair and hit the employee while yelling a racial slur. He then started punching the victim, who is said to be a female.

The suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, violating civil rights by force, and vandalism damage.

The victim received minor injuries.

Mendoza is being held on $30,000 bail.
