According to the original report from California Highway Patrol, both Macias and Gomes admitted to drinking the night of the accident. 20-year-old Macias swerved while driving on Highway 202 and struck the 14-year-old girl.

Gomes, the passenger of the vehicle, exited to check on Balderrame and later told officers that she "didn't look like she got that messed up."

Both Gomes and Macias fled the scene without calling authorities.
