CHP: Hwy 178 reopens following Canyon fire

Officials said the canyon reopened around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The US Forest Service said along with Bakersfield Fire Department and Kern County Fire crews from all units were dispatched to the Kern canyon around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The fire was less than two miles east of the Kern River Powerhouse with 1/4 of the fire on the northeast side of Highway 178.

Officials said that they have not determined the cause of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The California Highway Patrol said it is shutting down the canyon and Highway 178 in both directions due to a fire.

According to early reports on the CHP information page, the fire is on the side of the canyon just east of Powerhouse One.

The CHP said the closure should last about 15 minutes.
