Take a look at this 10-pound, 22-scoop sundae being served up at an Arizona soda shop

PHOENIX — How many scoops of ice cream equals 10 pounds?

About 22 scoops.

That happens to be the base of this mountainous dessert at MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain, a Phoenix staple that has stood the test of time.

"The Legend" sundae is one of three over-the-top desserts -- albeit the largest one, and the most expensive at $100 -- that MacAlpine's has on its menu.

Ten pounds of different flavored ice cream is carefully scooped on top of each other in a popcorn-sized bowl. At times, ice cream shelves are created to hold the next layer.

Once the scale hits 10 pounds, streams of whipped cream are added to the side, plus cherries, a choice of other toppings, and a trio of sauces.

"The Pinnacle" is a bit smaller at seven pounds of ice cream, and "The Masterpiece" tips the scale at four pounds. Each comes with a couple of toppings, whipped cream and cherries.

MacAlpine's soda fountain opened in the 1930s. Ownership has changed over the years, most recently in 2001, but the name has stood the test of time -- more than 80 years worth.
