BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — UPDATE: 11:50 a.m. June 17

The Kern County coroner has identified 32-year-old Jose Antonio Almaraz Hurtado as the man who died after driving off an overpass in East Bakersfield.

A post-mortem examination will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.

A man is dead after driving off an overpass in East Bakersfield Sunday afternoon.

The Bakersfield Police Department responded to a major-injury crash around 2:15 p.m. on East Truxtun Avenue.

Officers discovered a single car had been traveling eastbound on East Truxtun Avenue, approaching the Beale Avenue overpass.

The driver, a man and only occupant of the vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He later died due to his injuries.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved, but speed appears to be a factor in the collision.
