RENO, Nev. (AP) — Chain restrictions remain in effect on U.S. Interstate 80 after a winter storm dumped more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of snow on the top of some ski resorts around Lake Tahoe.

Chains were required Friday on all but four-wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on a 50-mile (80-kilometer) stretch of eastbound I-80 from Nyak, California to the Nevada-California line just west of Reno. Westbound traffic is subject to the same restrictions for an additional 10 miles (16 km) to Baxter, California.

The storm packing winds gusting in excess of 100 mph (160 kph) dropped 25 inches (63 cm) of snow at the Squaw Valley ski resort near Tahoe City and 22 inches (56 cm) at Northstar near Truckee, California.

About a foot (30 cm) of new snow was recorded at Mount Rose southwest of Reno. About 8 inches (20 cm) was reported at Incline Village, 5 inches (13 cm) at Carson City and 3 inches (8 cm) on the west side of Reno.

The National Weather Service said strong winds would continue in the highest elevations before tapering off Saturday. But mostly sunny skies were reported in the Reno area Friday with quieter weather in the forecast for the holiday weekend.
