SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California's confirmed coronavirus cases have topped 415,000, surpassing New York for most in the nation. Johns Hopkins University data showed Wednesday that California now has about 6,000 more cases than New York. But New York’s 32,520 deaths are by far the highest total in the country and four times more than California’s tally. California on Tuesday confirmed 12,807 new cases, a one-day record. Los Angeles County is the state's epicenter for cases and deaths. County health director Barbara Ferrer implored people to stay home as much as possible and avoid gathering with people outside their households.
