BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A dual celebration is taking place Saturday when active duty military veterans and members of the community are taking part in flag day, which happens to fall on the Army's birthday!

A Flag Day ceremony is a chance to retire the American flag with honor.

If the stripes are faded or the flag is worn and ripping on the edges, Military officials say that is the time to show the ultimate respect to the flag and properly lay it to rest.

The Young Marines began folding and collecting flags at Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest.

The ceremony took place at 10 a.m. and it was followed by the U.S. Army birthday celebration.

Then at 12 p.m. the UFW Post 97 in Downtown Bakersfield had an open house serving lunch with entertainment, while observing social distancing.
