3 Latin American Ladies Shaking Up Hollywood

Posted

NBC’s Saturday Night Live is making history by introducing its first Latina cast member, Melissa Villasenor – and it’s about time. Kristina Guerrero is taking a look at her and two other Latin American ladies breaking new ground in the entertainment world.

1.  Melissa Villasenor

Villasenor rocketed into the national spotlight as a finalist on season 6 of America's Got Talent, showing her comic chops with impressions of Barbara Walters and Christina Aguilera. Now she will get to show off her amazing talent each week on Saturday Night Live!

2.  Aimee Carerro

Just this summer, Disney introduced us to their first Latina princess, Elena of Avalor. The storyline and the fairy tale kingdom are based on Latino mythology and tradition. Actress Aimee Carerro -- the voice of Elena -- says everyone can learn from her character.

3.  Laurie Hernandez

The world went head over heels for this Olympic champion -- she was the first U.S.-born Latina in thirty years to make the American Olympic Women's Gymnastics team, winning  silver  on the balance beam and gold with her final five teammates. The next prize she has eyes on -- the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy this season on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.

Latinas aren't stopping there -- they're just aiming higher! In next month's election, both Loretta Sanchez of California, and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada are vying to become the first Latina senator.
