Bakersfield Police were sent to the area near Mill Creek Park near 20th Street and V Street regarding a man armed with a gun at about 1:30 p.m.
A BPD sergeant said reports came out that the suspect was armed with a gun, however, they determined later that he may have been armed with a BB gun.
Nearby residents said the suspect lives in the apartment complex behind the 23ABC News studios and allegedly suffers from mental illness.
They said the man can often be seen walking the streets in his boxers and a T-shirt.
23ABC's Mike Hart spoke to the store owner of the Mobile Gas Station on Union Avenue who said that the suspect entered his store with a fake toy gun that had an orange tip on it, purchased a drink and left.
