Earthquake of magnitude 8 strikes off Mexico's Pacific coast

UPDATE (10:13 a.m.):    MEXICO CITY (AP) -- The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported waves coming into Mexico at around 3 feet tall. They are predicting waves around 10 feet tall to hit some coasts of Mexico.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday night that a strong earthquake hit off the coast of southern Mexico, near the border with Guatemala. 

The quake, which was felt as far as Mexico City and Guatemala City, had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 and depth of 20 miles. 

It struck off the Pacific Coast 74 miles southwest of Tres Picos, Mexico, which is 600 miles southeast of Mexico City. 

A Tsunami threat is being evaluated by the Tsunami Warning Center. The center advised the public that tsunami waves could hit within three hours off the coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and even Ecuador.
