UPDATE (8:20 p.m. 5/1/17) : KCSO Deputies have confirmed a man found laying in the roadway in south Bakersfield was shot. 

Kern County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a man found with major head injuries in south Bakersfield near Ming Avenue and Sunshine Avenue.

The person who called 911 originally told dispatchers it was a hit and run. 

But, when Deputies arrived on scene at about 7:45 p.m. on Monday, other witnesses and people nearby said they believed it was a shooting and that they had heard gunshots. 

The incident is still under investigation.
