COVID-19 Medicare site shows incomplete data for nursing homes

Posted
and last updated

If you're looking into a nursing home for a loved one you may have to do a little extra digging to see how it handled the coronavirus. Many facilities are only reporting recent case numbers and deaths on the COVID-19 Medicare website.

That's because the government is only requiring data as of May 8th to be made public.

There is no penalty for withholding previous numbers that may reflect poorly on the home. For example, Life of Care in Washington, where one of the first major outbreaks happened, is reporting no confirmed cases and no deaths on the medicare page.

Nursing homes have accounted for a large portion of the coronavirus death toll.
