BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man was arrested for an assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon after police said he barricaded himself in an apartment complex in Southwest Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield Police Department responded around 7:20 p.m. Friday to reports of a shooting in the 4700 block of Beechwood Street. When they arrived they found a man who confirmed he had been shot at but was not injured.

Officers found evidence of a shooting in a nearby parking lot and a suspect, 59-year-old Gregory Biggs, who had barricaded himself in an apartment complex.

According to police, several neighboring apartments were evacuated, and the BPD SWAT Team responded.

After several hours, Biggs was taken into custody around 10:52 p.m.

A handgun was recovered from the scene.

He is due in court Tuesday.
