Driver in a deadly hit-and-run turns himself into Bakersfield Police, victim identified

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 70-year-old man crossing the street on Mount Vernon Avenue near Monterey Street has turned himself in to police.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. Sunday. According to the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle was traveling northbound on Mount Vernon Avenue when it struck a 70-year-old man crossing the street. That man died following that collision and has been identified by the Kern County Coroner as Aurelio Garcia Sr. California Highway Patrol Sergeant Michael Phillips said the driver did not stop following the crash.

On Sunday morning at around 9:30 a.m., Joshua Reyes turned himself in at the Bakersfield Police Department on Truxtun Ave. The CHP was contacted and it was determined that Reyes was the driver at the time of the deadly crash.

The Kern County District Attorney's Office will determine what if any charges are warranted following a full investigation. If you have any information you are asked to call CHP at 661-396-6600.
