Deadly crash in Shafter leaves three people dead, deceased identified

SHAFTER, Calif. — Three people are dead and two others injured following a collision Monday evening in Shafter.

Twenty-seven-year-old Juan Gabriel Luna Carranza, 27-year-old Ramon Suastegui Arreola were declared deceased at the scene, and 19-year-old Yolanda Gutierrez was transported to Kern Medical where she later died from her injuries

According to the California Highway Patrol, around 4 p.m. CHP responded to the intersection of Orange St. at Poplar Ave. for reports of a two-vehicle collision.

Officers determined an Infiniti sedan with three people inside was traveling southbound on Poplar Ave. at an unknown speed at the intersection of Orange St.

A Chevy Impala with two people inside was traveling westbound on Orange St. at a high rate of speed, according to CHP. The driver of the Impala, Gutierrez, from Shafter, didn't stop at the stop sign and broadsided the Infiniti.

The driver of the Infiniti, Juan Gabriel Luna Carranza from Bakersfield, and the front passenger of the Infiniti, Ramon Suastegui Arreola, also from Bakersfield, died at the scene. The passenger in the back seat of the Infiniti, a 24-year-old man from Bakersfield, was taken to the hospital with major injuries.

Gutierrez, who was driving the Impala was transported to the hospital with major injuries where she later died.

The passenger in the Impala, a 24-year-old man also had major injuries as he was taken to the hospital.

Officials said it has not yet been determined if drugs and alcohol were a factor in this crash.
