DELANO, Calif. (KERO) — Adam Rene Guillen of Delano would have been getting ready to celebrate what would have been his 22 birthday in just a few days, but all of that was taken away from him when he was shot and killed nearly a year ago while visiting a friends vigil.

His murder remains unsolved as his family and the Delano Police Department are once again calling for the community's help.

“And you wonder if this is a nightmare and if you’re ever going to wake up from it,” said Pastor David Vivas, Adam’s father.

Pastor Vivas of Delano said when his son was shot and killed, his family was left with unanswered questions.

“We don’t know why someone would do this and we don’t know anything about it. We have no one in mind that we suspect,” he said.

More than a year later, Vivas is asking for anyone with information regarding his son's murder to come forward. A $3,000 reward is offered by the Kern County Secret Witness for any information about Guillen's death.

“As far as I know, Adam didn’t have any enemies and he was not involved in any gangs and got aligned with everybody and so I just don’t understand.”

The Delano Police Department is still actively investigating this case.

“At this point, we do believe it was mistaken identity because the style of the shooting was that style of gangs and they [mistook] Adam and his friends for someone else,” said Robert Nevarez, Chief of police for Delano Police Department.

He said there have not been any arrests made or any suspects at this time,

Chief Nevarez also shared that he knew Adam personally and he was very kind and well known throughout the community. He said they are not giving up on the case and neither is Adam’s family.

Whoever was responsible for Adams's murder I pray for them and I have been candid about my thoughts concerning this,” he said. “I don’t hate them but i want them to do the right thing.”

Vidas said there is now a $3,000 reward on Kern County Secret Witness for any information about Guillen's death. Anyone with information is asked to call (661) 322-4040
