Inmate on California's death row found dead in his cell

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has announced that 49-year-old Spencer Brasure, who was sitting on death row for murder, died in his cell.

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. — The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has announced that 49-year-old Spencer Brasure, who was sitting on death row for murder, has died.

Brasure was found unresponsive in his cell in San Quentin Prison early Thursday morning and was pronounced dead at 1:17 a.m. The cause of death is unknown at this time pending an autopsy.

Brasure has been on death row since August 1998. He was sentenced to death row for killing 20-year-old Anthony Guest. He kidnapped the former child actor and tortured him before setting him on fire.

According to the CDCR, "82 condemned inmates have died from natural causes, 27 have committed suicide, 13 have been executed in California, one was executed in Missouri, one was executed in Virginia, 14 have died from other causes and three – including Brasure – are pending a cause of death. There are currently 731 offenders on California’s death row."
