Small dog shot in the heart in South Bakersfield by a neighbor, according to witnesses

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — According to the Bakersfield Police Department, they received a call to the 2500 block of Fairview Road of shots fired around 9:40 a.m. this morning.

Once officers arrived on the scene they found a small dog shot and decease. As of right now, one male has been detained related to this investigation.

No other individuals or animals were injured.

23ABC went to the scene and spoke to several neighbors. Mary Cunningham, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years says that the dog that is now deceased was known as Bailey, and shares he was recently abandoned by his owners.

In an exclusive interview, Cunningham recalls the whole ordeal and states Bailey was shot in the heart by her neighbor after the K-9 wandered into his yard.

Cunningham says she ran out of her yard, as Bailey ran down the street. Once she caught up to the dog he collapsed and passed.

Cunningham says they immediately called police as she carried Bailey back to her yard. As police filled their neighborhood, Cunningham and others state they saw BPD remove an nine rifles from their neighbor's home.

BPD says that this is still an ongoing investigation.
