BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — Freshwater fish face an uncertain future, which threatens the way of life for millions of people.

A new report by 16 Global Conservation Groups shows 16 freshwater species were declared extinct in 2020 alone.

The report stats freshwater fish face increased threats from habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing and climate change.

More than 200 million people in Asia, African and South American reply on fish as their main source of protein.

The report states about a third of those people also depend on the freshwater fishing industry for work.
