LA Unified to get $6.4M in settlement over iPad

Posted
Los Angeles Unified has reached a tentative $6.4 million settlement over curriculum purchased from education software firm Pearson that the school district said its teachers barely used.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday  that the Board of Education is expected to vote on the deal in October.

The settlement is the latest fallout from a now-abandoned $1.3 billion plan to provide Apple iPads for every student.

The bidding process that led to the original contract is the subject of an FBI investigation.

Under that contract, Apple agreed to provide iPads to L.A. Unified while Pearson provided curriculum on the devices as a subcontractor. As a result, the settlement was with Apple, even though the dispute concerned the Pearson product.

The newspaper says the deal avoids protracted, costly legal wrangling with Apple and Pearson.
