Four teens were hospitalized with major injuries after a hit-and-run crash in Central Bakersfield on Monday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chevy Cobalt was heading west on Highway 178 west of Union Avenue. At the same time a Honda was heading west on the 178 in the same area.

The CHP says the Honda tried to switch lanes, but sideswiped the Cobalt, causing it to drive off the road, down an embankment and into a tree.

The four who were in the car were between 15 and 17 years old. They were taken to Kern Medical with major injuries.

The CHP says a 16-year-old was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Honda left the scene. There's no further description of the vehicle.
