A 41-year-old man and 2-year-old girl who were killed in a rollover crashthis morning were not properly secured, according to CHP.

The crash happened this morning around 2 a.m. According to CHP, 21-year-old Leilua Jean Lemana was driving a 2000 Ford Expedition around 80 mph southbound on I-5 north of Highway 223. For an unknown reason, Lemana allowed the the vehicle to travel to the right and off the roadway, where the Expedition overturned.

Six people were in the expedition at the time of the crash; a 14-year-old girl, twin 2-year-old girls and Lemana's 1-year-old boy. According to CHP's report, only Lemana and one of the 2-year-old girls were properly secured. The other four occupants were ejected during the crash. The twin 2-year-old girls and 1-year-old boy were secured into car seats, however the car seats were not properly secured into the car.

When emergency personnel arrived, 2-year-old Emmanitta Torres and 41-year-old Penitito Lemana, who was Leilua's father, were pronounced dead at the scene. Penitito Lemana was not wearing a seatbelt; Torres was buckled into a car seat, however the car seat was not properly secured into the car. Leilua Lemana was taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries. The other juvenile occupants were also taken to Kern Medical. The 2-year-old girl who was properly secured sustained minor injuries. CHP has not reported the condition of the two other juveniles.

All six of the occupants were from South San Francisco.

Alcohol and or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.

When 23ABC talked to CHP at-the-scene, CHP suspected Lemana could have been tired and may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Both CHP and BPD offer free car seat checks in order to ensure car seats are properly secured.
