9-year-old killed in crash in Southeast Bakersfield identified

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County Coroner's office has identified the 9-year-old boy who was killed in a crash in Southeast Bakersfield on Tuesday.

Nine-year-old Emiliano Hernandez died at Valley Children's Hospital in Madera Tuesday afternoon, hours after he was involved in a crash on Cottonwood and Pacheco roads.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Cottonwood Road and East Pacheco Road. The driver of the victim vehicle told police the pickup truck pulled out in front of him from East Pacheco Road and caused the crash. After the initial crash another vehicle struck the victim vehicle on Cottonwood Road.

The driver of the pickup truck, later identified as 32-year-old Evaristo Perez Nunez, abandoned his truck and fled the scene.

In addition to Hernandez, three other children ages 3-12, we also injured.

According to police, when officers went to arrest Nunez and take him into custody, he resisted and assaulted an officer, causing minor injury. After a brief struggle, officers were able to restrain Nunez and take him into custody without further incident.

Nunez was booked into the Kern County Jail for felony hit-and-run causing serious injury, assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving without license, driving without insurance, right-of-way violation and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
