BAKERSFIELD, CA. — May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Kern Behavioral and Resource Services is in it's 20th year of promoting the initiative in Kern County.

This month, various mental health awareness events will be going on around town.

The 'When Illness Becomes Wellness' art show is one of many events taking place. The art show is taking place the Guild House Restaurant in Downtown Bakersfield and displays local artist's art therapy pieces.

Carol McCalllin has four pieces displayed at the art show.

"It's helped me calm down, it slows my mind down," said McCallin. "I suffer from bipolar and it helps relax me."

Art therapy is one of the many ways Kern BHRS is tackling mental health awareness and how to face it.
